Turn 396 • Day 13Turn 12 of 32

The walk to Rhodes Station offered a brief, deceptive illusion of normalcy under the pale Saturday sunlight, the air carrying a faint tang of salt from the nearby river. Ryan swiped his transit card through the automated barrier, feeling the familiar, hollow clatter of the gate release a subtle knot of tension in his chest. With the frost-rimmed industrial chiller safely buried in a commercial bin blocks away, he adjusted the heavy canvas strap of his messenger bag over his charcoal overcoat, intending to catch an unhurried train north and simply lose himself in the Saturday transit crowds until the building management forgot his face.

As he stepped past the tiled concourse toward the platform stairs, however, a familiar, rigid silhouette caught his eye near the public notice board. It was an acquaintance from the regional accounts team, standing completely motionless under the flickering fluorescent glare. The colleague was staring intently at a freshly pinned black-and-white missing-persons flyer, his thumb nervously worrying the edge of a yellow sticky note clutched in his other hand. Ryan’s stride faltered for a fraction of a second as a cold wave of recognition prickled the back of his neck, recalling the grainy, exhausted photograph that had stared back from a similar flyer days before.

Mastering his features into the blank, deferential mask of an ordinary commuter who had nowhere to be and nothing to hide, Ryan subtly altered his trajectory toward an adjacent set of stairs. He kept his head lowered, letting his wire-rimmed glasses catch the harsh light just enough to obscure his eyes as he slipped past the periphery of his colleague's vision. The heavy thrum of an incoming train drowned out the quiet rustle of paper behind him, but as Ryan descended onto the quiet platform, the suffocating weight of the administrative machinery pressing in from all sides felt heavier than ever.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
