Turn 397 • Day 13Turn 13 of 32

Ryan sank onto the slatted wooden bench of the suburban platform, his tired bones absorbing the chill radiating from the concrete beneath. He adjusted the heavy canvas strap of his messenger bag, letting out a measured, quiet breath as he watched the flickering amber text of the overhead arrival board cycle through delayed services. The platform was relatively sparse for midday, smelling faintly of brake dust, damp ballast, and old asphalt—the mundane, utilitarian backdrop of a city that kept moving regardless of the administrative ghosts haunting its workers.

A few feet away, two men in high-vis vests and grey corporate jackets stood leaning against a green support pillar, their low murmurs cutting through the ambient hum of an approaching freight line. "...rerouting the entire northern stack loop through the sub-basement corridor," one of them muttered, tapping a heavy-duty clipboard. "Ever since the residential foundation anomalies at the Rhodes terminus were flagged under the Frost-Line protocol, the automated switches have been ghosting platforms. Whole block's technically off the map, yet the freight trains keep cycling down the utility spur like it's a standard terminus."

Ryan’s fingers tightened automatically around the coarse canvas of his bag, his gaze fixed blankly on his scuffed leather shoes as a cold prickle of realization traced down his spine. The railway network wasn't just a means of escape; it was part of the same subterranean machinery that had swallowed his apartment, threading its digital and physical infrastructure directly into the tracks beneath his feet. He kept his expression schooled into the blank, unreadable mask of an ordinary commuter waiting for a delayed connection, even as the walls of the city seemed to close another inch tighter around him.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
