Turn 395 • Day 13Turn 11 of 32

Navigating past Mrs. Gable with a tight, apologetic nod, Ryan hurried down the remaining concrete steps of the stairwell, his muscles burning and the dead weight of the matte-black crate pressing hard against his ribs. Mrs. Gable's sharp gaze lingered on him for a fraction of a second too long, but she offered only a wary murmur about the building's perpetual plumbing noises before letting him push through the heavy glass ground-floor service door. The crisp, salt-tainted breeze of the Rhodes waterfront hit him instantly, carrying the faint, diesel hum of a commuter train rumbling across the nearby rail bridge under a pale Sydney sky.

Making a direct beeline for the communal brick waste enclosure tucked behind the visitor parking bays, Ryan found the heavy green commercial bins mercifully empty of onlookers. With a sharp, grunt-filled heave, he lifted the frost-rimmed, unlabelled industrial chiller and dumped it straight into the maw of the nearest bin. The impact triggered a final, loud hiss of pressurized chemical vapor that billowed out in a ghostly white cloud over the edge of the plastic lid before quickly dissolving into the bright morning air, leaving behind only the faint, artificial scent of chilled circuit boards.

Wiping a smudge of soot from his gloved palm onto his trousers, Ryan took a slow, steadying breath, his heart thumping a mild, defensive rhythm against his ribs. He adjusted the strap of his canvas messenger bag over his charcoal overcoat, making sure his worn notebook and the familiar shape of his daily belongings were secure. With the unauthorized corporate anomaly momentarily discarded, he turned away from the bins and began walking toward the local station, eager to put physical distance between himself and unit 604 before the building's administrative machinery noticed what was missing.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
