Turn 422 • Day 14Turn 6 of 32

Ryan spread a thin, even layer of butter across the warm surface of the toast with methodical, deliberate strokes, watching the yellow fat melt into the porous golden grain. The usual sounds of a Sunday morning in Rhodes drifted up from the balcony—a distant car on the main road, the faint rustle of gum trees in the breeze, and the low, ever-present electrostatic hum of the improvised server racks humming behind his living room partition. For a brief moment, the kitchen felt entirely ordinary, anchored by the familiar scent of toasted wheat and the quiet comfort of his routine.

Just as he smoothed the butter to the final corner, a dull mechanical scraping sound echoed sharply from the ceiling void directly above his head. It was a slow, grating friction, heavy and rhythmic, sounding precisely like iron machinery or thick cable sliding across bare concrete in a restricted maintenance shaft. The vibration traveled straight down through the plaster, making the cheap metal cutlery in the drawer clink softly against one another and causing the naked bulb of the overhead pendant light to tremble by a fraction of an inch.

Ryan paused, his butter knife still resting against the edge of the crust, his expression flat and weighed down by a familiar, bone-deep exhaustion. He gave the ceiling a single, unimpressed glance before laying the knife across the plate. Strata management would no doubt issue another evasive memo about foundation settling or routine duct inspections if he reported it, but as the metallic scrape scraped against the silence once more, Ryan simply picked up his ceramic mug of tea, deciding that whatever unauthorized tenant occupied the building's phantom gaps could wait until he at least finished his breakfast.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
