Turn 421 • Day 14Turn 5 of 32

The heating element inside the compact toaster glowed a dull, even orange, casting a warm amber reflection across the white laminate counter. Ryan stood patiently beside the small table, watching the faint curl of steam rise from the bread as it browned. Beneath the ordinary scent of toasted wheat, however, the air carried the dry, electrostatic tang of the makeshift server racks humming behind his living room partition—a constant, rhythmic vibration that made the cheap cutlery in the drawer clink softly against one another.

Just as the metal spring began to click toward its release point, a heavy, deliberate floorboard creak echoed sharply from directly above his kitchen ceiling. The sound was distinct and localized, as if someone wearing hard-soled shoes had shifted their weight on bare concrete. Ryan froze, his hand hovering inches from the toaster lever. The building's management had always insisted that the architectural void above the sixth-floor northern stack was completely sealed and vacant, yet the heavy groan of timber and plaster above felt unsettlingly close, as though the unseen tenant of the upper void was keeping precise pace with his Sunday morning routine.

With a sharp pop, the toaster lever sprang upward, sending a puff of warm vapour into the air and breaking the sudden stillness. Ryan exhaled a slow, quiet breath, letting his shoulders drop from their tense height as the mundane clatter of the kitchen reasserted itself. He reached for a butter knife, deliberately keeping his eyes fixed on the golden-brown crust of the toast, refusing to look up at the ceiling again. There were administrative run-sheets to mentally organize and apartment repairs to log, and he had no intention of letting the phantom architecture upstairs dictate the rhythm of his day.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
