Turn 29 • Day 1Turn 29 of 32

The digital clock in the corner of Ryan’s monitor clicked over to precisely 8:00 PM, casting a pale blue glow across the otherwise deserted marketing floor. The only sound was the low, intermittent hum of the overhead air conditioning unit cycling down for the night, leaving the expansive room feeling vast and hollow. Ryan rubbed his tired eyes, finally closing out the last of the vendor spreadsheets for the upcoming regional product launch. With a soft, weary sigh, he reached down to pull his canvas messenger bag up from beneath the desk, setting it across his lap to zip the main compartment shut before the long journey back to Rhodes.

As his fingers adjusted the brass-toned metal slider on the bag's heavy cotton strap, his thumb brushed against a tiny, flat detail he had never truly registered during the three years he had carried it. Stamped directly onto the underside of the rectangular brass adjuster buckle was a microscopic serial code—V-33—its neat, machine-pressed digits filled with a faint trace of dark factory lacquer. It was an insignificant component of an ordinary mass-produced bag, yet it sat there with the same quiet, deliberate permanence as the hidden tags and markers scattered throughout his day. Ryan offered the tiny stamping a brief, knowing nod, slung the strap over his shoulder, and finally switched off his desk lamp to head for the elevators.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
