Turn 28 • Day 1Turn 28 of 32

The digital clock in the corner of Ryan’s monitor clicked over to precisely 7:30 PM, casting a quiet, lonely glow across an otherwise deserted fifth-floor marketing pod. The rest of the floor had emptied out over the last hour, leaving behind only the rhythmic, muted hum of the overhead ventilation and the distant, twinkling panorama of the Barangaroo waterfront through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Ryan let out a long, measured breath, zipped closed his canvas messenger bag, and finally stood up from his ergonomic mesh chair, rolling his shoulders to shake off the stiffness of a long, administrative Monday.

As he stepped away from his desk and reached out to click off the small swing-arm lamp lighting his workspace, his gaze drifted to the wall-mounted light switch plate by the pod’s main exit archway. Right on the lower right corner of the crisp white plastic toggle plate sat a tiny, faded red dot sticker, no bigger than a matchhead. Its edges were slightly curled and yellowed with age, baked into a microscopic bump beneath years of cleaning wipes and passing fingers. In the three years he had worked at Corravale Beverages, walking through that exact archway twice a day, five days a week, he had never once registered its presence, treating it as nothing more than a permanent shadow on the plastic.

Standing in the stillness of the empty office, Ryan offered the tiny red dot a quiet, contemplative nod, finding a strange, comforting symmetry in how much of the world remained entirely unseen until you finally paused to look. He clicked the light switch down, plunging his desk into shadow, and slid his bag over his shoulder. With his keys jingling softly in his pocket, he turned his back on the silent marketing pod and headed toward the glass-backed elevators, ready to make his way down to Wynyard and catch the T9 back to Rhodes.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
