Turn 93 • Day 3Turn 29 of 32

The rhythmic clatter of the T9 commuter train echoed against the carriage walls as Ryan stared down at the bright yellow memo resting on his laptop's palm rest. Around him, tired office workers stared blankly into their phones or nodded off against the glass, utterly indifferent to the quiet tension vibrating through his chest. The kanji characters scrawled across the paper felt heavier than the ink had any right to be, a pristine administrative decree demanding he halt an investigation he was barely beginning to understand.

The surveillance file on his unmarked flash drive had timestamped the intrusion at precisely 18:45—long after he had packed his canvas bag, walked past the fifth-floor elevators, and descended into the evening street to catch his train. Yet the physical note had materialized on his keyboard the moment he booted up the machine on the carriage. That seemed a bit suspicious to Ryan. It wasn't just a simple prank or a forgotten artifact from a coworker; it implied a physical impossibility, or worse, a deliberate, hyper-targeted surveillance of his exact movements that defied the basic laws of office hours and distance.

With a slow, careful motion, Ryan folded the yellow square in half and slipped it deep into the inner pocket of his charcoal coat, beside the metadata printouts and the cold-storage manifests. The train slowed with a familiar metallic screech as it approached the Concord West platform, the yellow station lights flashing past the window like metronome ticks. He kept his hands steady on his knees, breathing through the cold knot in his stomach, and prepared for his stop at Rhodes.
