Turn 61 • Day 2Turn 29 of 32

The quiet lobby of the apartment tower in Rhodes offered a cool, hushed sanctuary after the breezy walk from the station, the warm recessed lighting reflecting softly off the polished tile floors. Stepping through the glass sliding doors, Ryan adjusted the canvas strap of his messenger bag over his shoulder and paused automatically by the bank of mailboxes near the entrance, a routine gesture to check for any stray correspondence before heading up to the sixth floor.

As he scanned the grid of metal doors for number six-fourteen, his gaze drifted slightly lower, catching on a tiny, ordinary detail he had somehow missed through three years of daily comings and goings. Tucked neatly into the bottom corner of the brushed-aluminum housing, right beside the master maintenance panel, was a small, faded silver foil sticker bearing a line of microscopic dot-matrix text. It was completely banal—likely an obsolete inspection marker or asset code left behind by a technician years ago—yet it had sat there silently through thousands of identical arrivals.

Ryan offered the weathered little marker a quiet, thoughtful nod, feeling a faint sense of amusement at how many invisible layers of the city quietly accumulated around him. Slipping his hand into his pocket to finger his apartment keys, he turned toward the elevator bank, letting the steady, comforting rhythm of his evening routine carry him the rest of the way home.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
