Turn 48 • Day 2Turn 16 of 32

Leaving the shaded stone bench behind, Ryan made his way back along the sunlit boardwalk of the Barangaroo precinct, the light chatter of fellow office workers and the rhythmic lapping of the harbour water fading into the low hum of afternoon traffic. The midday air was crisp and salt-tinted, carrying the faint, roasted aroma of espresso drifting out from a nearby kiosk as the rush of the lunch hour began to ebb into the steady, measured pace of the post-meridian shift.

Just before stepping onto the polished granite pavers leading to the revolving glass doors of his office tower, a low, steady drone caught his attention from somewhere high above. Ryan paused, tilting his head back to shield his eyes against the brilliant glare of the sky. Far up in the vast expanse of blue, a small, twin-engine prop plane was banking hard, leaving behind a thick, chalky trail of white smoke that hung suspended against the atmosphere. As he watched, the aircraft stitched the final loops of a sprawling message—first a clean sequence of numerals, followed immediately by an erratic, tightly wound jumble of uppercase letters that slowly began to dissolve and blur into the high-altitude wind.

For a quiet second, Ryan stood completely still amidst the bustling stream of pedestrians, a faint, wry smile touching the corners of his mouth. It was likely just a corporate advertising stunt or a local flight school running calibration drills, yet the stubborn persistence of alphanumerical strings following him from office furniture straight up into the stratosphere felt almost comical. With a soft, reflective shake of his head, he adjusted the canvas strap of his messenger bag, crossed the threshold into the cool air-conditioned lobby, and headed toward the elevators to tackle the afternoon's vendor briefs.
