Turn 445 • Day 14Turn 29 of 32

For a long, quiet moment, Ryan simply stared at the frantic, rhythmic blinking of the amber status light, his breath pluming in the freezing air. A lesser man—or perhaps someone less accustomed to the arbitrary, after-hours emergencies of corporate event planning—might have reached out to tap the interface, hunting for a command line or a hidden override key. But Sunday evening at twenty past eight was sacred territory. With the slow, deliberate finality of a coordinator closing an out-of-office ticket right before logging off for the weekend, Ryan simply reached out, slid the mirrored wardrobe door shut with a muffled click, and walked away.

The biting chill receded slightly behind the laminated wood paneling, leaving the narrow hallway merely cold instead of arctic. He retreated to the relative warmth of the compact living space, pulling his collar tighter and pouring a fresh splash of hot water into his ceramic mug to dilute the lukewarm dregs of his evening tea. As a T9 commuter train rumbled past the balcony, shaking the double-glazed panes with a familiar, mechanical rattle, Ryan settled onto the worn fabric of the armchair, deciding that whatever impossible audit or inventory discrepancy the machine was waiting for could bloody well sit in his inbox until Monday morning.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
