Turn 431 • Day 14Turn 15 of 32

Silently watching the inspector leave through the half-open doorway, Ryan didn't offer a parting word as the man stepped out into the dim fluorescent glow of the hallway. With a slow, mechanical motion, Ryan pulled the heavy timber door shut and slid the deadbolt home, locking the apartment against the cold corridor draft. The click of the latch echoed hollowly in the small entryway, sealing off the outside world and leaving him alone with the persistent, low-frequency hum vibrating steadily through the drywall.

He walked back toward the compact kitchen, his steps sounding flat and muted against the laminate flooring. The apartment no longer felt like a quiet Sunday morning refuge; it had the sterile, picked-over quality of an event space hours after a corporate activation had wrapped up and the vendors had packed away their displays. On the windowsill, Chief’s drooping green fronds stirred faintly in the draft of the overhead vent, entirely indifferent to the phantom deficits and liquidation schedules that had just been indexed against his name.

Ryan reached out and rested his palm against the cool, stainless-steel surface of the kettle, finding it completely cold. There was no tea to brew, no run-sheet to review, and no morning routine left to salvage. He simply stood there in the quiet stillness of unit 604, feeling like a solitary coordinator left standing at an empty desk long after the office had already been cleared out from beneath him.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
