Turn 401 • Day 13Turn 17 of 32

Standing up from the slatted timber bench, Ryan smoothed the fabric of his charcoal trousers with an automatic, habit-driven gesture before stepping across the threshold and into the empty train carriage. The heavy pneumatic doors slid shut behind him with a soft, airtight hiss, instantly cutting off the ambient noise of the suburban platform. The interior smelled faintly of ozone, old floor-grade carpet, and a sharp, chemical undertone reminiscent of a high-capacity office printer running hot. Row after row of blue vinyl seats stretched into the dim distance, illuminated by the harsh, flickering glare of fluorescent tubes that hummed at an identical frequency to the sub-basement machinery beneath his apartment building.

Ryan took a seat near the middle of the carriage, keeping his posture rigid and composed as he carefully hoisted his heavy canvas messenger bag onto the empty seat beside him. The train lurched forward with a low, mechanical whine, picking up speed as it navigated the concrete cutting of the rail corridor. Through the smudged, grey-tinted windows, the familiar suburban rooftops and old industrial warehouses blurred into a monotonous streak of concrete and rusted corrugated iron, bearing him southward along a route that felt less like public transit and more like a scheduled administrative conveyance running strictly on corporate time.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
