Turn 38 • Day 2Turn 6 of 32

The heavy timber door of apartment six-fourteen clicked shut behind him, the latch catching with a familiar, mechanical snip that Ryan verified with a gentle, automatic tug on the brass handle. He shifted the canvas strap of his messenger bag higher onto his shoulder and turned down the carpeted corridor of the sixth floor, the muted charcoal wool dampening the soft scuff of his leather-soled shoes against the floorboards. The hallway was quiet, save for the low, subterranean thrum of the building's central air-handling system and the faint scent of someone's morning toast drifting from around the corner.

As he approached the brushed-steel plate of the elevator call button, his eyes drifted downward to the base of the structural concrete pillar that framed the entryway. Half-buried beneath a thick, uneven accumulation of off-white commercial paint applied during some forgotten corridor refresh years ago, a small, rectangular plastic label caught the fluorescent wash from overhead. Stamped onto its yellowed, brittle surface in faded dot-matrix ink was the alphanumeric sequence L-06. It was undoubtedly a leftover contractor's asset tag from the tower's initial construction, completely mundane and entirely ignored by the hundreds of residents who rushed past it twice a day.

Ryan paused for a fraction of a second, offering the tiny, weathered marker a quiet, contemplative nod of recognition before pressing the silver elevator button. The soft, chime-like ping echoed down the empty corridor a moment later, and as the heavy glass doors slid smoothly apart, he stepped into the cool, silent interior of the car, letting the small discovery settle into the background of his morning routine as the descent began.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
