Turn 327 • Day 11Turn 7 of 32

The heavy steel door was still vibrating on its industrial hinges when Ryan made his decision. A rational, well-adjusted marketing coordinator would have turned on his heel, walked past the security reception, and buried himself in spreadsheet run-sheets for the morning product launch. Instead, with a quiet, resigned exhale that fogged slightly in the chilled air of the foyer, Ryan slipped his hand around the heavy brass handle, eased the door open just enough to clear his shoulders, and stepped through into the gloom.

The transition from the polished, brightly lit lobby to the raw concrete stairwell was instantaneous and stark. The ambient hum of office chatter and distant espresso machines vanished, replaced by the heavy, stagnant draft of subterranean plumbing and the faint, chemical tang of fresh masonry. Below, the rhythmic, metallic clatter of heavy work boots echoed against the curved stairwells, bouncing off bare concrete walls marked with faded, industrial utility tags. Ryan kept his footsteps light, his leather-soled oxfords clicking softly against the steps as he maintained a cautious distance behind the retreating supervisor, his canvas messenger bag shifting heavily against his ribs.

Descending past the ground level and deeper into the building's skeletal underbelly, Ryan felt the familiar, crushing weight of an unscheduled audit closing in around him. The air grew noticeably colder, carrying the unmistakable damp scent of sub-basement utility shafts and forgotten archives. Glancing down briefly at his watch—the digital face glowing with quiet indifference at just past nine o'clock—Ryan adjusted his glasses, squared his shoulders beneath his pressed white collar, and continued downward into the dark.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
