Turn 322 • Day 11Turn 2 of 32

The crisp morning air of Rhodes carried the faint tang of industrial brine as Ryan made his customary walk down toward the station, his canvas messenger bag riding comfortably against his hip. Despite the restless night and the low, muffled thudding he had heard from the ceiling voids before leaving, he moved with the practiced, automatic rhythm of a man who relied on rigid schedules to keep the edges of reality from fraying. He swiped his transit card through the barrier just as the digital board flickered to life, noting the arrival time for the northbound T9 service that would carry him down toward the corporate towers of Barangaroo.

As the commuter train hissed to a halt and the sliding doors parted to reveal a familiar, tired sea of grey suits and damp wool, Ryan stepped inside and made his way toward his usual corner seat near the vestibule. He paused mid-step, his hand tightening on the strap of his bag. Resting squarely on the blue vinyl cushion, as though deliberately reserved for him by an unseen ticketing agent, sat a stiff, unaddressed manila envelope. The ambient hum of the carriage seemed to recede into a dull ringing as Ryan stared down at the crisp paper, acutely aware of the heavy, bureaucratic silence it carried onto the morning commute.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
