Turn 31 • Day 1Turn 31 of 32

The T9 Northern Line deposited Ryan back at Rhodes Station just after nine o'clock, the cool evening breeze off the Parramatta River carrying the faint scent of salt and damp concrete. Walking the short, familiar path past the illuminated glass towers toward his building, the quiet neighborhood felt entirely different from the frantic morning rush. He swiped his electronic fob at the main glass entry doors of his apartment block, stepping into the warmly lit, tiled lobby where the low hum of the intercom system provided the only sound.

Waiting for the elevator to descend from the upper floors, Ryan rested his hand against the sleek, brushed-steel frame of the call button panel, his eyes wandering idly across the metal faceplate. Right beside the downward arrow, tucked neatly into the narrow gap where the steel met the plaster wall, was a tiny, faded red adhesive dot, no bigger than a peppercorn, stamped with a microscopic letter R. It was completely inconsequential—likely left by a technician during a routine lift inspection months or even years ago—yet in three years of coming home through this exact lobby at the exact same hour, he had never once laid eyes on it.

The elevator doors chimed softly and slid open with a smooth, pneumatic sigh, breaking his brief reverie. Ryan offered the empty car a quiet, inward nod, stepped inside, and pressed the button for the sixth floor, letting the small, overlooked mark fade seamlessly into the quiet rhythm of his return home.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
