Turn 276 • Day 9Turn 20 of 32

The afternoon light slanted harshly across the laminate surfaces of the fourth-floor marketing pod, casting long, geometric shadows over the open-plan desks. Ryan stared blankly down at the glowing rows of shipping ledgers on his screen, where phantom inventory transfers to the derelict Mascot facility bled into unallocated corporate line items. But the sterile numbers failed to hold his focus. The unsettling image of the industrial crate leaking its spectral, chemical vapor across his living room floorboards gnawed relentlessly at his composure. Checking the bottom right corner of his monitor, where the digital clock ticked past three-thirty, he realized he could no longer wait out the afternoon behind a spreadsheet. If the building’s strata manager was planning an unscheduled pipe inspection or poking around mulberry stack six, he needed to be there to manage the fallout before his private life completely dissolved.

With a quiet, calculated efficiency, Ryan slid his wireless mouse into the side pouch of his canvas messenger bag, unlinked his company laptop, and slipped it neatly inside. He kept his movements deliberately casual, avoiding eye contact with the neighboring pods as he slung the heavy strap over his charcoal-suited shoulder. Passing the communal coat stand and the muffled murmur of a marketing alignment meeting, he made his way toward the elevators without a word of explanation to anyone. Corravale Beverages' labyrinthine administrative machinery could chew through its own paperwork in his absence; right now, intercepting the building manager before he unlocked Unit 604 took precedence over every project milestone on the board.

By the time Ryan emerged from the glass-and-steel foyer of the Barangaroo tower into the crisp afternoon air, the commuter rush was only just beginning to stir the subterranean walkways. He tapped his worn transit card against the glass barrier of the Wynyard station turnstile, descending into the cool, tiled depths of the rail loop just as a northbound T9 service rumbled toward the platform. As he boarded the train and claimed a quiet corner seat, his fingers brushed against the heavy ledger pressed securely inside his bag. The rhythmic clack of the steel tracks carried him northward toward Rhodes, leaving the corporate labyrinth behind, but leaving him hurtling directly toward whatever toxic residue was waiting for him at home.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
