Turn 251 • Day 8Turn 27 of 32

Ryan offered the heavy-set man a tight, exhausted blink, playing the part of a bewildered commuter who had missed the last three stops of his intended train line. Before the stranger in the oil-stained trench coat could press his interrogation about the missing auditor's ring any further, a sudden, dense wave of evening commuters surged forward from the platform stairs. The automated gates clattered rhythmically, swallowing the tide of weary office workers and parting the narrow space between Ryan and the stranger with the unyielding momentum of a rush-hour crowd.

In the crush of shuffling briefcases and damp woolen coats, a slight, trembling figure in an oversized corporate fleece careened sharply past Ryan’s shoulder. With a fleeting, desperate brush of cold fingers against wool, something small and rigid was deftly slotted into the deep side pocket of Ryan's charcoal overcoat. Before Ryan could turn his head or catch a glimpse of the person's face, the frantic shape dissolved into the descending stairwell, swallowed entirely by the grey subterranean gloom of the station.

Shifting his grip on the scuffed leather briefcase, Ryan surreptitiously slid his hand into his coat pocket. His fingertips brushed against a cold, miniature plastic canister—a vintage microfilm capsule, its tiny surface ridged with microscopic perforations. A familiar, suffocating knot of corporate dread tightened in his chest, but years of surviving arbitrary performance reviews and structural overhauls kept his face schooled into a blank, mild mask. Adjusting the strap of his canvas messenger bag, Ryan stepped around a discarded transit flyer and joined the steady stream of commuters heading out toward the damp night air, determined to catch the next train back to Rhodes before the administrative machinery could find another way to corner him.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
