Turn 247 • Day 8Turn 23 of 32

Ryan slid back into his ergonomic chair at the fourth-floor marketing pod, the familiar scent of stale carpet and the steady hum of overhead fluorescents offering a fragile, artificial shield against the mounting pressure. Around him, the afternoon office chatter was beginning to thin out as colleagues packed away their mugs and locked their screens, preparing for the evening commute to the train stations and ferry wharves. He exhaled a slow, weary breath, his hand resting instinctively against the heavy, illicit bulk of the leather-bound ledger and the cassette tape tucked safely inside his canvas messenger bag.

Before he could even click open his inbox to check the impending audit notices, a temporary mail courier in a high-visibility vest briskly strode down the carpeted aisle, dropping a thick, sealed manila folder squarely onto the center of his laminate desk before vanishing toward the elevators. Ryan froze, his fingers hovering inches from his computer mouse. Stamped across the front of the heavy brown envelope, typed in sharp, uncompromising sans-serif block letters, was a single, chilling piece of identifying text: his exact home apartment address in Rhodes.

Ryan glanced sideways through the low partition walls, but his remaining colleagues were entirely absorbed in their spreadsheets, completely oblivious to the silent arrival. With slow, deliberate movements, he pulled the folder toward his keyboard, feeling the cold, inescapable logic of the corporate trap tightening around him as the office clock ticked closer to five o'clock. Without breaking his outward salaryman composure, he slipped the unblemished envelope deep into his canvas bag beside the growing archive of forged manifests, adjusted his tie, and prepared for the long, tense journey back to the T9 line.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
