Turn 245 • Day 8Turn 21 of 32

Ryan returned to his desk in the fourth-floor marketing pod after a brief, tense trip to the communal printer, his eyes stinging slightly from the dry air conditioning. The late afternoon sunlight was cutting horizontally across the open-plan floor, casting long, stark shadows from the rows of dual-monitor setups and overflowing paper trays. He eased back into his ergonomic mesh chair, feeling the dense, unsettling bulk of the architectural kitchen photographs and the fraudulent vendor invoices pressing against his ribs from inside the canvas messenger bag propped beside his feet.

Resting squarely in the center of his keyboard, directly over the spacebar, was a fresh square of bright neon paper. It had certainly not been there when he stood up two minutes prior. Unlike the frantic, self-forged warnings that had plagued his morning, this piece of stationery bore sharp, stark block lettering written in an entirely unfamiliar, clinical hand. Ryan froze, his breath catching as he read the brief, chilling question scrawled across the paper: Did you find what was missing from the archive yet?

He stared down at the clean, taunting text, his hand hovering inches above the plastic keys while the hum of office chatter and desultory phone calls continued around him as if nothing were amiss. Two pods down, a colleague was laughing quietly at a joke about a delayed shipment, completely oblivious to the silent psychological war playing out across Ryan's desk. The proximity of whoever was leaving these messages—moving through the open office unseen—sent a cold shiver down his spine, reminding him that the invisible trap closing around his corporate identity was shrinking by the minute.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
