Turn 237 • Day 8Turn 13 of 32

As the midday office chatter swelled around the fourth-floor marketing pod with talk of lunch runs to the ground-floor food court, Ryan remained anchored to his ergonomic chair, the grainy sub-basement photograph still resting beside his keyboard. Before he could slide it into the drawer alongside the illicit ledger, a different courier—this one wearing a high-vis vest bearing an unrecognizable logistics subcontractor logo—strode purposefully down the carpeted aisle. Without a word or a glance upward, the courier dropped a heavy, thick manila envelope directly onto the center of Ryan’s laminate desk before pivoting sharply and vanishing toward the elevators.

Ryan let out a slow, weary sigh, adjusting his pressed white collar as surrounding colleagues preoccupied themselves with their own spreadsheets and coffee cups. With cautious fingers, he sliced open the flap of the heavy envelope, half expecting another fraudulent vendor invoice or architectural cross-section. Instead, shaking the interior yielded only a single, stiff object that fluttered down onto his blotter: a faded, raggedly torn railway ticket, worn soft at the edges and stamped with an obsolete regional transit code from years prior. There were no notes, no metadata printouts, and no corporate warnings—just the silent, jagged edge of old paper carrying an unspoken weight.

He stared at the torn cardboard fragment, the mundane hum of the office fluorescent lights seeming to dim slightly against the sudden chill in his chest. Tucked safely inside his canvas messenger bag alongside the hidden ledger, the ticket felt like a missing puzzle piece from a journey he could scarcely remember taking. With methodical calmness, Ryan slipped the torn slip into his desk's pen-holder, closed his laptop lid just enough to obscure the screen, and smoothed his expression into the tired, placid mask of a mild-mannered coordinator preparing to weather the afternoon shift.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
