Turn 233 • Day 8Turn 9 of 32

Ryan stared down at the grainy photograph of the sub-basement hatch, the harsh fluorescent glare of the fourth-floor marketing pod offering no comfort against the cold weight settling in his stomach. Around him, the familiar rhythm of the office trundled onward—a telephone trilling two rows over, the distant clatter of a ceramic mug, and the muffled drone of colleagues discussing regional beverage distribution targets. He reached out with a hesitant hand, intending to slip the unsettling picture inside his canvas messenger bag alongside the heavy leather-bound ledger before anyone could notice his distraction.

Before his fingers could brush the edge of the glossy paper, a dull, metallic thud echoed sharply from directly overhead. Ryan froze, his gaze snapping upward toward the slotted aluminum grill of the ceiling ventilation duct set into the acoustic tiles above his desk. A long, distorted shadow flickered across the painted louvers, cast by some unseen disturbance shifting within the internal maze of the building's ductwork. The sound was too heavy to be a loose bracket or a shifting damper, carrying with it a distinct, deliberate cadence that made the hairs on the back of his neck prickle.

For a long moment, Ryan remained motionless in his ergonomic chair, listening intently as the faint scuffle of something crawling through the metallic corridors died away into the steady, artificial hum of the central air conditioning. He exhaled a quiet, unsteady breath, smoothing the front of his pressed white collared shirt as if a neat appearance could shield him from whatever was pacing the ceiling above. Glancing sideways to ensure no one else in the pod had noticed the anomaly, he slowly pulled his desk drawer shut and forced his tired eyes back toward the blank sleep-mode screen of his laptop, waiting for the ten o'clock status sync to begin.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
