Turn 230 • Day 8Turn 6 of 32

The heavy bulk of the leather-bound ledger pressed against Ryan’s ribs like an anchored weight as he stepped off the elevator and navigated the polished corridors of the Corravale Beverages office. He had barely set foot on the carpeted expanse of the marketing level, mentally preparing to slide his bag beneath a desk and pretend the morning commute hadn't just upended his sanity, when a hesitant voice called out from the auxiliary administrative counter.

It was a junior receptionist, a temporary staffer whose usual bright morning greeting was replaced by a tight, strained expression and an anxious habit of clicking her ballpoint pen against the laminate surface. She kept her eyes fixed firmly on a stack of interoffice mail, gesturing awkwardly down the narrow, semi-lit service corridor that led toward the old storage annex. She told him, her voice dropping into an apologetic murmur, that an urgent courier had dropped off an unidentified file marked with his employee ID, and that management required his immediate signature in the back office before the morning system sync locked out his credentials.

Ryan’s stomach tightened into a cold knot, the suffocating machinery of his own fabricated guilt clicking into place like clockwork. The mundane, fluorescent-lit office suddenly felt like a labyrinth designed entirely to corner him. Adjusting the canvas strap of his messenger bag with a steady, practiced hand, he offered the receptionist a tight, polite nod and turned his steps down the dim corridor, knowing that whatever name was waiting on that paper at the end of the hall, it was bound to seal his fate.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
