Turn 227 • Day 8Turn 3 of 32

The interior of the southbound T9 carriage was a wall-to-wall compression of damp wool, breath-fogged windows, and the dull, rhythmic clatter of steel wheels on jointed tracks. Ryan stood wedged near the sliding doors, gripping the overhead chrome strap with one hand while his other arm instinctively shielded his canvas messenger bag. Inside its main compartment, the heavy, leather-bound ledger he had scooped from the Rhodes platform sat like an unanchored anvil, pressing against his spare notebooks and a small plastic container of mints. He stared blankly at the condensation strip above the opposite window, trying to mentally rehearse the morning's upcoming vendor call for his department's summer activation campaign.

A sharp lurch of the carriage as it rounded the bend toward the inner-west junctions sent a ripple through the standing crowd, pressing a passenger in a frayed canvas jacket uncomfortably close to Ryan’s shoulder. Without turning his head away from the glass, the stranger let out a low, raspy exhalation that cut softly beneath the roar of the tunnel. "You grabbed the wrong copy," a dry voice murmured directly into the collar of Ryan's pressed white shirt, carrying the practiced, unhurried cadence of someone reading from an operational checklist. "The audit tallies for the Mascot depot aren't in that one. Leave it at the Wynyard turnstile, or you won't even reach the fifth floor."

Ryan’s chest tightened, a familiar, cold spike of workplace dread threading through his morning fatigue. Before he could turn his head to catch a glimpse of the speaker's face, the train began to decelerate with a long, metallic groan, and the dense block of commuters shifted abruptly toward the opening doors for the next stop. When the tide of bodies parted and spilled onto the platform, the space beside him was entirely empty, leaving only the heavy, incriminating weight of the leather-bound book pressing against his ribs.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
