Turn 225 • Day 8Turn 1 of 32

The stainless steel kettle on the low stovetop let out a sharp, single hiss before Ryan reflexively reached out to silence it, the quiet hum of the Rhodes apartment returning just as the first pale sliver of dawn brushed against the window glass. Before he could pour the boiling water over his morning green tea, his mobile phone vibrated sharply against the laminate surface of the kitchen table. He picked it up, expecting the usual automated vendor update or a passive-aggressive calendar reminder from the Barangaroo office, but found an unassigned text message glowing on the dark screen. The message contained no greeting, just a terse, unsettling instruction: Platform 2, Rhodes. Check beneath the timber bench for the leather briefcase you left behind on your first night in the city three years ago.

Ryan froze, his thumb hovering over the glass as a cold, inexplicable wave of vertigo washed over him. He had arrived in Sydney three years ago with a single canvas duffel bag and a hard-sided suitcase—he had never owned a leather briefcase. Yet, the moment he read the words, a bizarre, jagged fragment of memory flared behind his eyes: a heavy black case tucked beneath the wooden slats of the station platform, sitting in the damp night air while a northbound T9 train roared past. It was a memory that didn't belong to him, or perhaps one that had been quietly slipped into his history by an invisible hand.

Glancing down at his watch, which clicked past 06:55, Ryan set his teacup down untouched. The ordinary Monday morning routine—the pressed white shirt, the structured run-sheet, the predictable march to the station—suddenly felt like a thin veneer stretched over something far more precarious. Slinging his canvas messenger bag over his shoulder, he locked his apartment door and descended the concrete stairwell toward the tracks below, driven by an irresistible compulsion to see if anything was waiting for him in the grey shadows of the morning platform.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
