Turn 201 • Day 7Turn 9 of 32

With a noncommittal murmur meant to placate the frantic caller on his phone and the anxious neighbor lingering by the lobby crate, Ryan gently terminated the call and edged backward toward the elevator bank. The digital display blinked lazily before sliding open, offering a quiet, stainless-steel sanctuary away from the mounting administrative theater downstairs. As the car ascended past the third and fourth floors, he rubbed his temples, half-expecting the ceiling lights to flicker out or for the emergency brake to engage under the weight of the phantom logistics codes haunting his week. Instead, the lift chimed softly at the sixth floor, and he stepped out onto the familiar, neutral-toned carpet of his own hallway, longing for nothing more than a quiet cup of green tea.

Before he could even slide his physical key into the deadbolt of his unit, however, a frantic, staccato pounding rattled the wooden panels of his door. Ryan jumped slightly, spinning around to find one of the younger tenants from down the corridor standing there in mismatched sweatpants, looking thoroughly panicked. Without waiting for a greeting, the neighbor babbled breathlessly about an escaped pet—a famously skittish, long-haired cat that had somehow bolted out of an open balcony door during Sunday morning ventilation and was currently careening through the common hallways like a small, terrified phantom.

The neighbor grabbed wildly at Ryan’s sleeve, imploring him to help block the northern stairwell exit before the animal squeezed its way into the building's labyrinthine utility shafts. Trapped between the absurd corporate freight crate downstairs and a runaway domestic animal upstairs, Ryan let out a long, quiet sigh that carried the full, weary resignation of a man whose weekend had been entirely hijacked. With a mild nod of reluctant assent, he abandoned his keys in his pocket and turned toward the carpeted corridor, ready to chase down a cat.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
