Turn 145 • Day 5Turn 17 of 32

For a tense heartbeat, the manager's gaze followed the line of the compliance paperwork down to the edge of the laminate table. Then, a slender finger tapped against the dark plastic casing of the laptop. The tiny amber LED of the matte-black flash drive continued its rhythmic, mechanical pulse, casting a faint amber reflection against the brushed aluminum of the port. A thin, critical line appeared between the manager's brows as the shadow of a practiced, corporate smile touched the corners of their mouth.

"If you've got the quarterly vendor figures right there on the external, Ryan, why hasn't the regional sync gone through yet?" the manager asked, the tone pitched just low enough to remain a private reprimand while carrying the sharp edge of a formal inquiry. It was a calculated pivot, instantly reframing the unauthorized hardware not as an intrusion or a planted trap, but as Ryan's own delayed deliverable—a missing piece of the fraudulent puzzle they were actively assembling around his employee ID.

Ryan’s throat felt dry as fine office printer paper. Years of navigating cross-cultural stakeholder meetings and tight product launches kept his posture rigid and his hands resting flat on either side of the keyboard, effectively masking the small port beneath his forearms. He offered a slow, exhausted nod, leaning slightly into the performance of a beleaguered coordinator trying to catch up on a mountain of backlog. "There were some path errors on the local server mapping this morning," Ryan replied, his voice level and carefully drained of accusation. "I was just sorting through the directory mismatches before pushing the final batch."

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
