Turn 139 • Day 5Turn 11 of 32

The cool air of the Barangaroo waterfront hit Ryan like a physical reset as he strode away from the glass monolith of the corporate tower, his canvas messenger bag knocking heavily against his hip. He didn't have a definitive destination in mind other than putting as much pavement as possible between his abandoned desk and himself, the rhythmic thrum of city traffic and the distant murmur of harbor ferries providing a chaotic, indifferent backdrop to his sudden desertion. His mind raced back through the impossible binder and the forged signatures, the physical weight of his mouse and keys inside the bag serving as his only anchors to reality.

Halfway down the wide concrete promenade toward the transit hub, his phone vibrated sharply against his thigh, the screen flashing an incoming notification that made his steps falter. It was a text message from his direct manager, inquiring with polite, professional bewilderment why he hadn't dialed into the sudden, mandatory client emergency debrief that had supposedly just kicked off in conference room B. The text asked if he was experiencing technical difficulties with his remote connection, casually assuming he was supposed to be leading the unexpected session.

Ryan stopped beside a low public planter box, staring down at the glowing screen as the sheer audacity of the corporate gaslighting washed over him. Another phantom meeting, another completely fabricated crisis engineered to tie his login and his name to a disaster he had no part in creating. With a slow, exhausted exhale, he pressed the side button to turn the display dark, tucked the phone deep into his pocket, and resumed his steady walk toward the station stairs.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
