Turn 122 • Day 4Turn 26 of 32

The evening commuter crush at Wynyard Station was a familiar, shoulder-to-shoulder tide that Ryan navigated almost on autopilot, his mind still heavy with the digital ghosts and forged manifests tucked inside his canvas messenger bag. When a northbound T9 service finally pulled in with a metallic screech, he managed to secure a corner seat near the sliding doors just as the carriage filled with the tired hum of office workers heading back to the suburbs. As the train lurched forward, rattling into the dark tunnel beneath the harbour, Ryan let out a long, quiet sigh, resting his head against the cool glass and watching the amber reflections of the city blur into darkness.

It wasn't until the train cleared the underground and rumbled across the bridge toward the northern shore that his gaze drifted to the empty seat beside him. Wedged between the worn blue vinyl armrest and the fabric of his own coat was a stiff, manila interoffice envelope that hadn't been there when he first sat down. Ryan frowned, leaning in to inspect it under the flickering fluorescent lights of the carriage. The surface was completely clean except for a bold, machine-printed label directing the packet not to marketing, logistics, or finance, but to an unfamiliar, hyper-bureaucratic internal designation: Sub-Surface Infrastructure & Asset Reallocation Unit, Level 0.

Ryan stared at the unaddressed seal, a cold knot of fatigue tightening in his chest once more. The coincidence was too precise, dropping another piece of the corporate puzzle right into his lap just as he was trying to leave the office behind for the night. For a fraction of a second, his tired fingers twitched toward the flap, tempted to tear it open and see what obscure audit or fabricated transfer lay waiting inside. Instead, with a weary shake of his head, he slipped the envelope into the outer pocket of his bag alongside the rest of the day's accumulated evidence, turning his face back to the window as the familiar neon lights of Rhodes Station approached in the distance.

No suggestion won this turn. The story continued on its own.
